Case Study #1 Onshore Wind · 16 sites

Seamless connectivity for 16 wind farm sites

Challenge

A leading renewable-energy operator ran 16 onshore wind farms across some of the UK's most remote upland locations. Turbine SCADA, condition monitoring and site CCTV all relied on connectivity that simply wasn't there — no fibre for miles, patchy mobile coverage, and links that dropped every time the carrier rotated the IP address. Control-room teams were left blind to performance and faults for hours at a time, losing generation data and sending engineers on long drives to check something a dashboard should have shown.

Solution

We engineered one resilient connectivity standard and rolled it out to every site:

  • Multi-bearer links — satellite as primary where no fibre exists, with 4G/5G LTE as automatic backup
  • A fixed UK public IP so SCADA, VPN and remote access stay reachable even after a carrier IP change
  • Segmented site networks separating turbine OT from CCTV and corporate traffic
  • Power & UPS-backed comms cabinets to ride through grid dips and outages
  • 24/7 proactive monitoring with automatic failover, backed by our Remote Hands engineers

Outcome

All 16 sites came online with real-time SCADA and condition-monitoring data flowing back to the control room. Automatic failover now keeps sites connected through carrier and power interruptions — ending the multi-hour blackouts — while remote visibility of every turbine and camera has cut unnecessary site visits and sped up fault response.

Case Study #2 Solar PV · 11 sites

Reliable connectivity for 11 solar farm sites

Challenge

An established solar generator operating 11 PV farms in rural locations needed dependable connectivity to monitor generation, carry inverter and SCADA telemetry, and keep security systems online. Several sites had no viable fixed line, and every hour of downtime meant blind spots in production data and unprotected assets in the field.

Solution

A robust, monitored network standard was designed for each site and rolled out across the portfolio:

  • Per-site multi-bearer design — satellite primary plus 4G/5G LTE failover, tuned to each site's coverage
  • Wireless networking linking inverter stations, metering and the security network across the site
  • Power & UPS resilience so telemetry and cameras survive power interruptions
  • Centralised 24/7 monitoring with automatic failover and alerting
  • ODBC/SCADA-ready connectivity so production data reaches head-office systems

Outcome

All 11 sites now have reliable, uninterrupted connectivity for real-time generation monitoring and management. Downtime from connectivity or power interruptions has been minimised — maximising usable generation data and output — and the operator runs one consistent, monitored network standard across the entire solar portfolio.

Case Study #3 Construction · Temporary sites

Contractor connectivity for temporary work sites

Challenge

A construction company running multiple temporary work sites needed reliable, high-speed internet from day one — for cloud project management, drawings, site cameras, welfare units and contractor devices. Each location had no existing infrastructure, and short project lifespans made fixed lines slow and impractical to justify.

Solution

We built connectivity that deploys fast and moves with the project:

  • Rapidly deployable kits — satellite plus 4G/5G LTE, live within hours of arriving on site
  • Secure site Wi-Fi for contractors, offices and welfare units, segmented from operational systems
  • Backup LTE failover so a single outage never stops the whole site
  • Power & UPS options for cabins and comms where mains is unreliable or absent
  • 24/7 monitoring and Remote Hands support for the life of each project, then relocated to the next

Outcome

Every temporary site got fast, reliable internet supporting seamless contractor operations and cloud project management. Connectivity now moves with the work — deploy, monitor, decommission, redeploy — with minimal downtime, and the whole estate is covered by one supplier and one support line for internet, Wi-Fi, power and on-site help.

More ways we've helped

Shorter briefs, same standard.

Not every job is a multi-site rollout. Here are a few focused engagements that show the range of problems we solve.

Wind
Onshore wind farm

Remote CCTV brought back from the dead.

A wind site's camera system kept dropping off whenever the satellite link rotated its IP, leaving the operator blind for hours at a time.

  • Deployed a managed router with a fixed UK public IP
  • Added 4G failover with the same IP on switchover
  • Segmented cameras from the control network

Result: reliable remote viewing, 24/7.

Solar
Solar PV farm

One resilient link where there was none.

A new-build solar site had no fibre for miles and needed dependable connectivity for SCADA and security from day one.

  • Engineered a satellite + 4G multi-bearer solution
  • Automatic failover with 24/7 monitoring
  • UPS-backed comms cabinet for power resilience

Result: SCADA and CCTV online since commissioning.

BESS
Battery storage

Secure remote access to critical plant.

A battery storage operator needed safe remote access to controllers without exposing OT systems to the internet.

  • Managed firewall with OT-aware segmentation
  • Encrypted VPN for engineers and vendors
  • Cyber assessment and remediation plan

Result: safe access, isolated control network.

Portfolio
Multi-site asset owner

A whole portfolio on one private network.

An asset owner ran a mix of OEM platforms across sites with no unified view of connectivity or performance.

  • SD-WAN linking every site to head office
  • ODBC integration into GE and Vestas data
  • Custom portal with availability and alarms

Result: one dashboard for the whole estate.
