Seamless connectivity for 16 wind farm sites
Challenge
A leading renewable-energy operator ran 16 onshore wind farms across some of the UK's most remote upland locations. Turbine SCADA, condition monitoring and site CCTV all relied on connectivity that simply wasn't there — no fibre for miles, patchy mobile coverage, and links that dropped every time the carrier rotated the IP address. Control-room teams were left blind to performance and faults for hours at a time, losing generation data and sending engineers on long drives to check something a dashboard should have shown.
Solution
We engineered one resilient connectivity standard and rolled it out to every site:
- Multi-bearer links — satellite as primary where no fibre exists, with 4G/5G LTE as automatic backup
- A fixed UK public IP so SCADA, VPN and remote access stay reachable even after a carrier IP change
- Segmented site networks separating turbine OT from CCTV and corporate traffic
- Power & UPS-backed comms cabinets to ride through grid dips and outages
- 24/7 proactive monitoring with automatic failover, backed by our Remote Hands engineers
Outcome
All 16 sites came online with real-time SCADA and condition-monitoring data flowing back to the control room. Automatic failover now keeps sites connected through carrier and power interruptions — ending the multi-hour blackouts — while remote visibility of every turbine and camera has cut unnecessary site visits and sped up fault response.
